Mourning the Unlived Life
Regret, Resentment, and the Meaning of Life
Regret is a common human experience that often leads to thoughts of what could have been. It is a feeling of longing for a different life, one that we didn’t choose. However, resentment can also accompany regret. We may resent ourselves for the choices we made, towards others who we feel held us back, and even towards life itself for not turning out as we had hoped. Regret and resentment intertwine to form a complex grief, a mourning for the life that we didn’t live.

However, when we look at regret and resentment from a spiritual perspective, we see a different picture. Many wisdom traditions suggest that the unfolding of our lives is not entirely random or self-directed, but rather shaped by larger forces such as the hand of fate, the unspooling of karma, or the intricate workings of a divine plan.
Seen from this vantage point, our missteps and missed chances are not cosmic accidents or irrevocable failures, but rather essential threads in the grand tapestry of our soul’s evolution. Each choice we make, each road…
